Painkiller Upgrade is my riff of the world-famous cocktail ‘Painkiller’ and is for all of you who drink one too many a night before. The cocktail is the sophisticated version of one of the most famous cocktails out there, Pina Colada.

What’s the story behind the Painkiller Upgrade.

Did you ever hear of the cocktail called Painkiller? If not, you are missing a lot. Invented back in the ’70s at the Soggy Dollar Bar on Jost van Dyke, a so-called Sailor’s Paradise in the British Virgin Islands. You are wondering why is called Soggy Dollar Bar? Well, the bar was accessible only by water and not from the land so everyone who visits must to walk from the boats in the sea and pay with their wet cash.

The Painkiller is a version of the Piña Colada but made without a blender and includes orange juice as well. Very refreshing, less creamy and still sweet, tropical and delicious.

So, I am bringing my riff on this refreshing drink, using a spiced rum from Cut Rum, Coconut Milk instead of cream. Also, adding a touch of zest with lovely Lemon, Yuzu and Turmeric Cordial from Mr Fitzpatrick’s Vintage Cordials to push the sweetness and sour note. Finally, some Caribbean Pineapple Liqueur by Giffard and Pineapple Star Anise Bitter by MS. BITTERS.

Thought, it may look strange to the bartender but is your chance to shine and tell him/her the story of the Soggy Dollar Bar.

How to make

  • Shake with a pebble or crushed ice.
  • Free pour into a large highball.
  • Garnish with a pineapple ring and grated nutmeg.
  • Serve with an eco-friendly reusable straw.

Ingredients

  • 40ml Cut Spiced Rum
  • 15ml Caribbean Pineapple Liqueur
  • 15ml Lemon, Yuzu & Turmeric Cordial
  • 30ml Fresh Orange Juice
  • 120ml Pressed Pineapple Juice
  • 30ml Coconut Milk
  • 1 Pippet Pineapple Star Anise Bitter
