Highland Sunrise

Highland Sunrise is a cocktail i created to for Chivas Master 2019. I didn’t qualify in this competition, but this is entirely normal. So many talented bartenders submit cocktails, and this makes it very hard. Over the years I competed in many cocktail competitions. I did win some of them but didn’t succeed on others. Taking part is essential to push your creativity and keep on top of the game.

I work behind the bar for a long time now. Start back in 1995 in my hometown Sofia, Bulgaria. First I experience Chivas Regal after the company invite me to a training session. Don’t remember the exact year but it must be 2000 – 2001. Since then I become interested in Whisky history and especially Scotland distilleries.

To forward fast till present days, I moved to the UK back in 2009. I do love to move to Scotland, but still, I am only a few hours away.

Highland Sunrise Cocktail

Bulgaria & Scotland share some similarity. Both Countries:

  • Have a delightful mix of mountains, coastline and city life.
  • Playing the bagpipes. In Bulgaria is called gaida.
  • Have a long and bloody history, wars, borders disputes etc.
  • Like to eat their chips and cheese.
  • Offer a welcome drink to guests. Scotland serves in Quaichs and Bulgaria in a small ceramic cup.

Probably is more but I have enough reasons to create a cocktail reminding me of my home but also inspired by the beauty of Scotland. Scotland & Bulgaria have long, and cold winters and this cocktail represent the late sunrise, bringing warm feeling with bitter touch in the air and sweetness of the warm home.

Whisky cocktails are often loved or hated. So many people disagree with the idea of using whisky of any type in a cocktail. Well, I can say this is not true, and I disagree with these people. It is hard to turn everyone or convince them about the idea of a Whisky Cocktail. The Chivas Regal is one of the whisky’s that work very well in a cocktail. Being blended whisky helps a lot to carry other ingredients in the mix and not lose its character.

My wife doesn’t like whisky at all. She can’t stand the smell of the beverage, but when she decided to try this cocktail, she loved it. So, if you are one of those people who doesn’t drink whisky but willing to try, I recommend to start with a cocktail and work out what is your favour mix.

How to make

  • Add the Chivas and Acacia Honey to a shaker.
  • Stir to help the honey dissolves.
  • Add ice, the rest of the ingredients and shake till chilled.
  • Double strain over large clear ice block into a Coupe glass.
  • Garnish with Orange zest twist.
  • Spray twice with Chivas Marnie Mix.

Ingredients

  • 30ml Chivas Regal 12 Years Old
  • 15ml Grand Marnier
  • 15ml Martini Riserva Speciale Ambrato
  • 5ml Fernet Branca
  • 30ml Orange Juice & Honey
  • 3 drops Saline Solution
